Santa Barbara
The Perfect itinerary for a romantic weekend in santa barbara
Santa Barbara is a very special place to both my husband and I, considering we are both UCSB Alumni. That’s why it shocked us both when we realized that this was our first trip back in nearly 5 years. With the date of our civil wedding having just passed, we knew a trip back to Santa Barbara would be the perfect way to celebrate. Our itinerary was a thoughtful blend of nostalgic college favorites and Santa Barbara’s finest establishments, resulting in a perfectly curated romantic weekend. Whether you’re planning a celebratory getaway with your partner or simply looking for an elevated coastal escape, this guide is for you.
Welcome to Santa Barbara
Arrival: Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) is the primary local hub and incredibly convenient, located just 10–15 minutes from downtown. However, if you are based in Northern or Southern California, like we are, driving is a seamless and scenic alternative. The drive from Los Angeles takes under two hours, while the road trip down from the Bay Area takes about five to six hours along the breathtaking California coast.
The Layout: Nestled between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific, Santa Barbara is beautifully compact and highly walkable. The city is made up of several distinct, vibrant areas, including the historic Downtown corridor, otherwise known as "State Street”, the artsy Funk Zone, and the upscale Montecito coastline. My personal favorites are the Funk Zone, for its high-energy wine-tasting scene and chic boutiques, and Montecito, for its upscale coastal charm and romantic dining spots.
Where to Stay
The Milo:Located right on the Santa Barbara waterfront, The Milo effortlessly blends retro-chic California beach vibes with casual, contemporary design. It is the perfect stay for travelers seeking a boutique, centrally located experience complete with lush palm-fringed courtyards, cozy poolside fire pits, and a breezy, laid-back energy that makes you feel relaxed from the moment you arrive.
El Encanto, a Belmond Hotel: Secluded in the Riviera hills above the city, this historic, design-forward resort is the ultimate destination for an intimate, romantic getaway. It is the quintessential choice for couples who prefer a quiet, curated escape over the bustling energy of the waterfront. The overall vibe is effortlessly elegant, timeless, and peaceful. Their zero-edge infinity pool offers sweeping, panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the city's famous red-tile roofs.
The Ritz-Carlton Bacara: For couples seeking a more secluded luxury resort experience, The Ritz-Carlton Bacara is an excellent pick. Tucked away on 78 acres along the Gaviota Coast (about 15–20 minutes north of downtown), the property offers three infinity-edge pools, a massive world-class spa, and private pathways that lead directly down to a pristine, quiet beach.
Rosewood Miramar Beach: Situated on the exclusive shores of Montecito, Rosewood Miramar Beach is the premier choice for the ultra luxury-minded traveler who appreciates grand, estate-style elegance mixed with classic California coastal hospitality. The atmosphere is opulent yet inviting, offering direct access to high-end boutiques, and excellent ocean views from the upscale Caruso's restaurant or the chic Miramar Beach Bar, where you can sip cocktails right over the sand.
the milo (Where we stayed)
Number of nights: 3
Room Type: Ocean View Premier King
The Milo offers a wonderful variety of rooming options. We opted for the Premier Ocean View King and were so impressed by how bright, airy, and inviting it was. The space perfectly captures that quintessential beach-house feel, featuring:
Comforts: A remarkably soft bed with a fluffy comforter, chic mid-century modern nightstands, and a dedicated sitting area framed by windows that look right out toward the palms and the Pacific.
Little Luxuries: The room features a beautifully curated, Spanish-influenced design with vibrant pops of color and locally inspired artwork. The room comes complete with a flat-screen TV, a coffee maker for your morning brew, and a mini-refrigerator to keep your local Central Coast wine perfectly chilled.
The Bathroom: Bright and well-appointed with a spacious walk-in shower boasting excellent water pressure (which is always a must after a long day in the sand and sun) and premium L’Occitane bath amenities.
Food & Drink
The Milo Market & Morning Coffee: For those seeking an early start to explore the city, the hotel's market space right by the lobby is a lifesaver. It is stocked with a lovely selection of artisanal snacks and beverages to fuel your morning. They also offer a morning coffee station that we took advantage of each day of our visit.
Bonus: In the evenings, The Milo sets up s’mores kits to roast out by their cozy courtyard fire pits and occasionally hosts complimentary happy hours for guests - the perfect way to wind down a day on the coast.
Local Partners: We loved that staying at The Milo afforded us benefits at other local establishments including The Lark, Loquita, Santa Barbara Wine Collective, and Helena Avenue Bakery to name a few.
Steps from the Funk Zone: While Milo offers great light bites, its best culinary amenity is its location. You are just a short, five-minute walk from the city's best dining scene, where you can indulge in wood-fired pizzas, fresh seafood, and endless urban wine-tasting rooms.
Amenities & Leisure: The Milo offers ample amenities to keep you relaxed and immersed in the Santa Barbara lifestyle during your stay. A few standout features we loved include:
Valet: If you brought a car for a California road trip, you’ll highly appreciate their 24/7 on-site valet service. Not only did the attendants help with our bags, but they were also incredibly swift every time we wanted to take the car out for a drive up into the Riviera or down to Montecito.
Milo Cruisers: This was our absolute favorite amenity and certainly not to be missed! The Milo offers complimentary beach cruiser rentals with your stay, and in our eyes, this is truly the best way to see the waterfront. We rented bikes and rode right along the Cabrillo beach path, heading past the pier, down to the Funk Zone, and through all the cute side streets that we otherwise wouldn’t have covered on foot.
dinner & Drinks
bouchon: Tucked right off of Santa Barbara’s iconnic State Street, this intimate, upscale gem is the perfect choice for anyone seeking a celebratory or elevated night out. The atmosphere is warm, romantic, and candlelit, making it a quintessential date-night spot. Their menu beautifully pairs classic French culinary techniques with fresh Central Coast ingredients like lump crab in their out-of-this world crab cakes. Their sommeliers will flawlessly pair each course with incredible, hard-to-find, Santa Barbara County wines and the service is incredible warm and welcoming.
The Lark: Located in a historic former fish market in the heart of the Funk Zone, The Lark is arguably the restaurant that put Santa Barbara’s modern culinary scene on the map. The vibe here is high-energy, industrial-chic, and effortlessly cool. Their menu features sophisticated, family-style sharing plates that highlight hyper-seasonal ingredients. From their famous crispy Brussels sprouts and the mouth watering corn bread to innovative locally caught seafood dishes, everything is designed to be shared and enjoyed around a communal table.
Zaytoon: This downtown favorite serves up exceptional, elevated Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine - like perfectly grilled kebabs, fresh mezze platters, and house-made hummus. While the food is fantastic, the true showstopper is the courtyard. You dine under a canopy of twinkling lights, surrounded by lush fire-pit tables, bubbling fountains, and occasional live music or belly dancing. It feels less like a restaurant and more like a secret, sultry garden oasis.
Toma: Toma is widely considered one of the best Italian restaurants on the coast and is also situated next door to The Milo. The atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between sophisticated and deeply comforting, housed in a charming historic building with views of the harbor. Their menu features an array of incredible handcrafted pastas, fresh-caught seafood, and local meats infusing classic Italian flavors with a modern California twist.
The Terrace at El Encanto: If you want to escape the downtown bustle for a drink with a view that will take your breath away, head up into the Riviera hills to El Encanto. Sitting on their elegant outdoor terrace feels like stepping into old-Hollywood glamour. The view is unmatched: an unobstructed, panoramic look at Santa Barbara’s iconic red-tile roofs sloping down to the sparkling Pacific Ocean.
Miramar Beach Bar: For an opulent cocktail experience, the Miramar Beach Bar in Montecito is the place to be. Perched on an elevated wooden deck directly over the sand, it is one of the only spots on the coast where you can sip a drink literally feet from the ocean waves. The vibe is reminiscent of a chic, vintage yacht club - effortlessly stylish and has a bit of a see-and-be-seen feel. It is the ultimate spot for a midday Aperol Spritz or a pre-dinner glass of champagne.
lunch favorites
The Honor Bar: Located in the heart of Montecito’s upscale Coast Village Road, The Honor Bar is the epitome of dark, moody elegance mixed with a lively, high-energy scene. The menu is small but flawlessly executed - their famous Ding’s Crispy Chicken Sandwich is to die for, and paired with a perfectly shaken cocktail or a glass of local premium wine, it makes for an incredibly chic lunch or dinner date. It’s always buzzing, so expect a wait, but I promise you, it’s worth it.
Fun Fact: I worked here for over two years when I was in college and it truly was the most incredible experience. I have always had a deep appreciation for the hospitality world since working for the Hillstone Group.
Santo Mezcal: Situated right at the gateway to the Funk Zone, Santo Mezcal offers an elevated, modern take on Mexican cuisine that is far from your average taco joint. The atmosphere is sleek and contemporary with a vibrant coastal pulse. They specialize in showcasing fresh, locally sourced seafood alongside rich, traditional Oaxacan flavors. We loved the tuna ceviche and the house made guacamole.
Brophy Bros: You cannot visit Santa Barbara without experiencing Brophy Bros. Perched right on the harbor, this iconic, bustling seafood institution offers a classic, completely unfussy coastal dining experience. The main draw here - aside from the exceptionally fresh oysters, clam chowder, and cold beers - is the panoramic view of the marina and the Santa Ynez mountains from the upstairs bar. This spot also holds a special place in my heart: it was one of my grandfather’s absolute favorite seafood restaurants, and as someone who truly knew his way around seafood, his stamp of approval means you know it’s good.
East Beach Tacos: Tucked away from the main tourist drags, East Beach Tacos is a beloved local secret and was a favorite of my friends and I when we were in college. While the setting is entirely unassuming, the tacos are excellent! I love their ahi tuna, shrimp, & chicken tacos.
Breakfast & Caffeine
Jeannine’s Bakery: The atmosphere at Jeannine’s is quintessentially Santa Barbara - elevated, cheerful, and chic - and their breakfast classics and specialty drinks are to die for. Jeannine’s has been a fan favorite since I went to school in Santa Barbara 10 years ago and is still a favorite. Come early as the line gets very long.
Chad’s Cafe: For those looking for a great, unfussy breakfast in a fun and laid-back environment, Chad’s is the ultimate spot and it happens to be located right next door to The Milo. Housed in a charming, historic yellow cottage right on the waterfront, it offers a classic, retro beach-town diner vibe.
Helena Avenue Bakery: Located right in the heart of the Funk Zone, Helena Avenue Bakery is a rustic, artisanal gem. Their coffee and espresso selection is excellent, but the true standout items are their fresh-baked pastries and breakfast sandwiches made on house-made brioche and biscuits. Paired with a little local jam, it was easily one of the best breakfast bites of our entire trip.
The Shop Kitchen: For the ultimate casual, locals-approved breakfast, head slightly off the beaten path to The Shop. This is the spot for those looking for a fun, completely unfussy meal in a high-energy, open-air environment. They serve up elevated comfort food with cheeky names and bold flavors - think incredible breakfast sammies, loaded avocado toasts, and some of the best fried chicken and waffles on the coast.
Renaud’s Patisserie & Bistro: For an authentic taste of France in the heart of the American Riviera, Renaud’s is an absolute. This is one of my husband’s must-visit stops when we come to Santa Barbara and for good reason; their almond croissant is the best in the city.
Dart Coffee: For those looking for incredible coffee in a fun, artsy environment, Dart Coffee Co. is an absolute must. Tucked into a vibrant corner of the Funk Zone, this place features an enchanting garden patio that feels like a private oasis. Grab a specialty latte and make sure to order one of the famous Mony’s breakfast sandwiches they serve on-site.
Top Local Experiences
The Funk Zone: This area is an absolute highlight of any trip to Santa Barbara. Located right between the waterfront and downtown, this artsy district is a converted industrial neighborhood that now serves as the city's urban wine trail. It is incredibly walkable and packed with boutique tasting rooms, craft breweries, and trendy eateries. It’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon hopping from one tasting room to the next.
Strolling State Street: Taking a stroll down State Street is a quintessential Santa Barbara activity. The heart of downtown has been reimagined as a completely walkable, car-free corridor where the line between indoor and outdoor living completely blurs. On any given afternoon, you'll hear the clinking of glasses from bustling outdoor dining patios, see locals cruising on bikes, and catch musicians playing under the shade of the trees.
Inspiration Point: For the outdoor lover, this hike is an absolute must! Located just 15 minutes up into the Santa Ynez mountains from downtown, the trail takes you up into the foothills to deliver a stunning, panoramic view of the entire American Riviera, the coastline, and the Channel Islands in the distance. It’s a moderate, roughly 3.5-mile round-trip trek that rewards you with the best vantage point in the city.
Beach Cruising: There is truly no better way to embrace the laid-back Santa Barbara lifestyle than on a beach cruiser. The city features a flawless, palm-lined bike path that runs right along Cabrillo Boulevard alongside East Beach and West Beach. You can rent a cruiser and pedal your way from the harbor all the way down to the historic Stearns Wharf, stopping along the way to catch the coastal views or grab a drink over the water.
A Day Trip to Santa Ynez: If you want to venture just 35 minutes over the San Marcos Pass, a day trip to Santa Ynez, Los Olivos, or Solvang is an incredible experience. It shifts the vibe from coastal luxury to rustic wine-country chic, complete with world-class vineyards, tasting rooms, and gorgeous rolling hills.
packing essentials
Santa Barbara is a very relaxed coastal town - think flowy dresses, shorts and sandals, a bathing suit, etc. There are a few travel essentials, linked here, that I swear by when I travel. That said, I do also like to dress up and I’ve listed a few additional items below that I brought on our trip and love.
Good quality luggage: This is a non-negotiable for me. I absolutely love my Beis carry on and checked bag. My go-to weekend bag is my Quince Italian Leather weekender. I love that this bag is both sophisticated, practical and can fit under the seat in front of you on a plane. (Quince Code: INFG-26XXLAURENBENNETT10 for 10% off your first order!)
Vacation Ware: Everything I packed and wore during our weekend in Santa Barbara can be found linked here and here.
Good sunscreen: I swear by the Supergoop Unseen sunscreen. This sunscreen holds all day and layers great under makeup.
When to Visit
Best Time: Spring (March – May) This is a gorgeous time to visit the coast. The winter rains turn the Santa Ynez mountains a vibrant green, and the entire city bursts into color with blooming bougainvillea and jasmine. The weather is crisp and comfortable (usually in the mid-60s to low 70s), making it the ultimate time for walking around and exploring.
Local Favorite: Fall (September – November) Often called "Local’s Summer," fall is Santa Barbara's best-kept secret. The summer crowds head home, and any lingering coastal fog clears out, leaving behind the warmest, sunniest days of the year and crisp, cool nights. It is an incredible time for outdoor dining, wine tasting during the vineyard harvest, and enjoying warm late-summer nights.
A Quick Tip: Be wary of visiting in early summer, as California's famous "June Gloom" is a very real thing on the coast! Two days of our recent trip were completely overcast and stuck in the low 60s. Luckily, by the third day, the sun finally broke through and it warmed right up into the mid-70s.
How long to visit: For a perfect trip, I highly recommend a 3-night stay. This gives you a dedicated day to explore Downtown and the Funk Zone, a day to relax on the beach or wander through Montecito, and a day for a quick excursion - like wine tasting in the nearby Santa Ynez Valley, hiking Inspiration Point, or indulging in a spa day
