The Ultimate paso robles Guide: perfect for a romantic getaway or a weekend girls' trip
Living so close to Napa Valley, it’s easy to overlook California’s Central Coast. However, having visited Paso Robles annually for the past five years, I’m convinced this town is one of California’s best-kept secrets. With a charming downtown packed with top-tier restaurants, incredible wineries with welcoming staff, and a hidden-gem resort that feels straight out of the Tuscan hills, Paso Robles deserves a spot on your wine country bucket list. Whether you’re planning a romantic escape or a chic weekend girls' trip, this guide is for you.
Welcome to Paso Robles
Arrival: San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (SBP) is the closest option, located just 30 minutes south. If you are flying into a major hub, San Jose (SJC) or San Francisco (SFO) are about 2.5 to 3.5 hours north, while Los Angeles (LAX) is roughly 3 hours south. I have always driven from San Francisco and have found the drive to be seamless. It’s also nice to have a car, once you arrive, for exploring the area.
Tip: If you are planning on wine tasting, I’d recommend having an Uber or car service ordered in advance as Uber availability can sometimes be slim depending on where you are tasting
The Layout: Paso Robles is divided into two distinct sub-regions split by Highway 101: the Westside, known for rolling hills and cooler maritime breezes, and the Eastside, famous for sweeping views and warmer microclimates. The heart of the area is Downtown Paso Robles, centered around the historic City Park. The town square is highly walkable and offers a wonderful mix of tasting rooms, boutique shopping, and exceptional dining, making it the perfect base for your trip.
Where to Stay
Allegretto Vineyard Resort: This sprawling Tuscan-inspired resort blends Italian inspired elegance with central coast ease. Stay here for a romantic getaway complete with a high-end spa, lush courtyard gardens, a vibrant pool scene, and a wonderful onsite restaurant.
River Lodge: A stylishly restored motel turned design-forward boutique hotel, making it an ideal base for a chic weekend getaway. It offers a curated, intimate experience with custom vintage decor, a pool with private cabanas, and fire pits made for sipping central coast wines under the stars.
Hotel Cheval: Located just steps from the historic Downtown City Park, this luxury boutique hotel offers classic elegance for the elevated traveler. They are known for exceptional personal service, a cozy courtyard horse shoe bar, and nightly s'mores around the outdoor fireplaces.
La Bellasera Hotel & Suites: Positioned right at the gateway to Paso Robles wine country, this Mediterranean-style hotel offers spacious suites and elegant decor. It’s a comfortable, upscale option for travelers seeking a spacious stay that is slightly elevated without too many frills.

Cello Ristorante & Bar: The resort's signature restaurant serves delicious Tuscan-inspired Northern California cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients. It’s perfect for a relaxed breakfast, an artisanal cocktail at the bar, or a romantic dinner on the heated patio.
Morning Coffee & Market: I love a hotel that offers a complimentary morning coffee station to kickstart your day. You can also pick up light snacks and local treats before heading out to taste wine.
On-Site Tasting Room: One of the best perks is the resort’s own tasting room, where you can sample Allegretto’s estate-grown wines & olive oil right on the property.
Evening Fire Pits: In the evenings, the central courtyard comes alive with cozy fire pits and occasionally, live music - the perfect setting to wind down after a day of wine tasting
Amenities & Leisure
Spa: The resort offers a full service spa with excellent service offerings. We opted for the 60 minute swedish massage and this was one of the best massages I have ever had.
Pool & Cabanas: The Mediterranean-style pool area features ample loungers, private cabanas, and a hot tub surrounded by vineyard views as well as poolside services.
Valet & Service: On-site valet and self-parking options make coming and going effortless, while the staff provides very attentive service to help coordinate wine tours and dining reservations.
Wineries & Tasting Rooms Not to miss
Booker: If you appreciate modern architecture, like I do, paired with world-class Rhône varietals, this is a must-visit. Set into the rolling hills of the Westside, Booker features a state-of-the-art tasting lounge and deep wine caves. Book a terrace or cave tasting for an unforgettable flight of bold Syrahs and Grenaches surrounded by sweeping vineyard views.
LXV: A truly one of a kind tasting experience located near downtown Paso Robles, LXV takes wine tasting to a sensory level with their signature spice pairings. Each of their small-lot wines is paired with a specific artisanal spice blend served on a semi-firm sheeps milk cheese, designed to completely transform and elevate the flavor profile of the wine in your glass. Our favorite flavor pairing was the “butter chicken” spice blend with one of their white blends - truly remarkable how they complimented one another.
Daou: This well known estate offers the most spectacular 360-degree views in the entire region. Known for world-class Cabernet Sauvignons and luxury hospitality, I’d recommend reserving a spot on the outdoor patio for a sunny afternoon of exceptional wine and bites with some of the best vista views in the area.
Austin Hope: Famous for producing one of California’s most iconic and robust Cabernet Sauvignons, the Austin Hope estate captures the laid-back yet refined spirit of Paso Robles. Request a private, open-air cabana overlooking the vines for a guided flight of their bold reds.
Tooth and Nail: Housed in a literal stone castle surrounded by a moat and drawbridge, Tooth & Nail offers one of the most unconventional and fun winery experiences in Paso. Known for their edgy labels, rock-and-roll vibe, and food-and-wine pairings, you can enjoy a flight on the rooftop terrace or inside the library while soaking in the unique architecture and occasional live music events.
Dinner Favorites
The Hatch: A downtown favorite centered around a wood-fired rotisserie, craft cocktails, and an extensive collection of small-batch bourbons. The vibe is rustic-chic, making it the ultimate spot for comfort food with an elevated twist - think rotisserie chicken, wood-fired skillet cornbread, and excellent southern classics.
The Alchemist Garden: The Alchemist’s Garden pairs a moody, plant-filled atmosphere with some of the most inventive craft cocktails in wine country. The kitchen serves up globally influenced tapas and shareable plates, making it the perfect destination for late-night drinks, a chic date night, or small bites with friends.
Fish Gaucho: An upscale Mexican restaurant and tequila bar that serves fresh California-Mexican fusion with a heavy focus on seafood. Known for its vibrant atmosphere, creative tacos, fresh ceviche, and an incredible selection of over 200 craft tequilas and mezcals, it’s a go-to spot for a fun night out with friends or a lively date night.
Buona Tavola: A beloved local staple for authentic, high-end Italian cuisine right in the heart of downtown Paso Robles. Chef Antonio Varia serves hand-crafted pasta, rich risottos, and traditional Northern Italian specialties in a warm, intimate setting complete with a charming outdoor patio.

H. Cheval Coffee: Located right off the downtown square at the Hotel Cheval, this hidden-gem coffee spot offers exceptional, handcrafted espresso drinks and fresh pastries in a whimsical brick-paved courtyard. It’s the ultimate quiet morning spot to enjoy a latte or matcha, breakfast burrito, and a quiet moment before a day of wine tasting.
Amstrdm Coffee House: A stylish, Dutch-inspired coffee house located in downtown Paso Robles, known for its sleek design, piano lounge vibe, and high-quality specialty coffee. It’s the perfect spot to grab an artisanal espresso, fresh pastries, or a light breakfast bite before heading out to explore the shops around City Park.
Cello Ristorante: Located on-site at the Allegretto Vineyard Resort, Cello serves a wonderful sit-down breakfast experience. Skip the quick-grab counter and sit on the patio to enjoy a fresh cappuccino, farm-fresh omelets, lemon-ricotta pancakes, and health-forward favorites, all surrounded by olive trees and the stunning Mediterranean architecture.
Top Local Experiences
Wine Tasting: You can’t visit Paso Robles without diving into its world-class wine scene. Known for bold Cabernet Sauvignons and incredible Rhône blends, a day of tasting—paired with sweeping vineyard views and a leisurely vineyard lunch—is the main event. Be sure to book your tastings at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance and plan your transportation accordingly.
Spa Day: There’s no better way to cap off a weekend of wine tasting than with a total reset. Head to The Spa at Allegretto for a relaxing massage or custom facial, and take time to wander their courtyard gardens and sound labyrinth afterward.
Complimentary Bike Rentals: Allegretto provides free cruiser bikes for guests to explore at their own pace. Take a quiet morning ride through the surrounding vineyard lanes, or cruise toward downtown Paso Robles for a fresh espresso and bakery treat before starting your day.
Downtown Shopping & Pool Side Relaxing: Spend a slow morning browsing the curated boutiques, local artisan shops, and olive oil tasting rooms surrounding Downtown City Park. Afterward, head back to your resort to spend the afternoon lounging poolside.

Paso Robles has a wonderfully relaxed, wine country vibe - think elevated casual rather than overly formal. Sundresses, stylish denim, linen sets, and comfortable sandals or leather boots fit in perfectly everywhere from tasting rooms to downtown dinners. When to Visit
Best Time: September & October. This is harvest season ("The Crush"), making it an exciting time to visit. The vineyards are lush and heavy with fruit, and the town is buzzing with harvest events. The weather is warm, but keep in mind that room rates peak and popular tasting rooms book out weeks in advance.
Another great time to visit: March - May. Spring in Paso Robles is pure magic. The rolling hills turn a brilliant, neon green, wild mustard blooms everywhere, and temperatures are comfortably mild. It’s significantly less crowded than autumn, making it much easier to secure prime winery and dinner reservations at fair rates.
How long to visit: For a first visit, I would recommend 3-4 nights. This gives you enough time to explore both the Westside and Eastside wine trails, enjoy relaxed meals downtown, and spend a slow afternoon lounging by the pool without feeling rushed. You can find my Day 1 Itinerary linked here.
Local Pro-Tips
Book tastings and dining reservations in advance: While Paso Robles retains a relaxed, welcoming vibe, its top-tier wineries and downtown restaurants book out weeks in advance - especially on weekends. To secure your preferred time slots at places like DAOU, Austin Hope, or The Hatch, aim to lock in reservations at least 3 to 4 weeks before your trip.
Transportation: If you’re planning a full day of tastings, book a driver in advance, especially for groups. While Uber and Lyft are available in the main towns, they can be sparse near more remote estates, often leading to long wait times.
Visit San Francisco: If you have time to extend your stay, you will only be a few hours from my favorite city, San Francisco. I highly recommend adding 1–2 days to your itinerary to explore San Francisco’s iconic neighborhoods and food scene before wrapping up your California vacation (check out my SF guide for the best places to visit!)
